Context
A Quality Control (QC) Microbiologist in a pharmaceutical company is responsible for the periodic statistical evaluation of cleanrooms, clean equipment/utility systems, and personnel to ensure that the manufacturing environment continues to meet GMP requirements. This also includes establishing alert and action limits for physical, chemical, and microbiological parameters. Due to the large number of monitored locations, this analysis represents a significant operational burden. QC personnel often spend considerable time on repetitive tasks such as copying data, formatting spreadsheets, generating individual charts, and performing manual statistical calculations — all of which are error-prone and time-consuming.
Purpose
The purpose of using the StatSoft EM application is to streamline and accelerate the statistical evaluation of environmental conditions, enabling QC specialists to efficiently generate data-driven recommendations and produce comprehensive statistical reports required for regulatory inspections and pharmaceutical quality documentation.
Application
The QC department collects environmental monitoring data for cleanrooms, clean equipment/utility systems, and personnel, storing it in Statistica worksheets, Excel files, or — most effectively — in the dedicated StatSoft EM-DB database. The QC specialist imports environmental data from these sources (Statistica, Excel, or EM-DB) into the StatSoft EM application.
After importing the data, the specialist selects the appropriate statistical methods from preconfigured templates. The application automatically generates a standardized, comprehensive, professionally formatted statistical report containing all required analyses. The system calculates alert and action limits based on empirical or theoretical distributions, as well as additional methodologies such as rare-event monitoring or contamination recovery rate analysis in line with USP <1116>. Pareto charts and pie charts can also be used to summarize the most frequently occurring microorganisms by genus/species.
A QA specialist reviews the results, adds professional recommendations based on the analysis, and finalizes the document for inclusion in the quality records.
Outcome
Using StatSoft EM, the QC microbiologist successfully performed a statistical assessment of microbial counts in a Class C cleanroom monitored using a volumetric air sampling method. The analysis included the calculation of alert and action limits based on historical data, recovery rate assessment according to USP <1116>, and a pie chart summarizing microorganism frequency by genus and species.

Benefits:
Time Efficiency: Statistical reports for environmental conditions generated in minutes rather than hours.
Regulatory Compliance: Comprehensive, audit-ready documentation aligned with GMP Annex 1 expectations.
Data-Driven Decisions: Action and alert limit recommendations supported by robust statistical analysis.
Consistency: Standardized reporting format ensuring quality and repeatability across manufacturing areas.
Strategic Value: Redirection of saved time to higher-value tasks such as trend analysis, root-cause investigations, and continuous improvement.
